Rafting and Kayaking in Vail

Vail, Colorado, in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, is a fantastic summer destination for both river rafting and kayaking. A Vail family vacation will include a number of exciting Vail summer activities, in one of the largest resort areas in North America. Vail has its own whitewater park in Vail village, and there are also a variety of river rafting trips on the Colorado, Eagle and Arkansas rivers, with class I-V rapids. Vail kayak tours are also popular. Half day, full day and multiple day rafting and kayaking tours can be arranged through one of the outfitters in the area.

Vail Kayak Tours
Kayaking in high water on the Eagle or Piny rivers can be dangerous and is only for the experienced kayaker. However, sections of the Colorado River with moderate class I, II and III rapids, make a good choice for families with varied skill levels. On both white water and float trips, the scenery in the area is some of the best in the country. Local companies can provide guides or rent single or double kayaks along with all the necessary gear. Learn to kayak classes are also available in the Vail area.

River Rafting
One of the most exciting Vail summer activities is white water rafting. Rafting trips range from a relaxing family float trip to thrilling rapids. Some good Vail family vacation raft trips include sections of the upper Colorado, the lower Eagle, the Shoshone Rapids and Brown’s Canyon on the Arkansas river. The upper Colorado is a 4 1/2 hour easy stretch and is good for families with young children. The lower Eagle runs close to Vail and Beaver Creek and is a convenient 4 1/2 hour day trip for families. The 11 mile, 9 hour Browns Canyon tour is a good intermediate trip. Longer 3 to 10 day trips can be arranged with guides on places like the Delores River.
