Vail’s New Adventure Activities
Vail Mountain, the largest ski resort in the USA and one of the top winter (and summer) destinations on the continent, is getting even better with the upgrades to Adventure Ridge. As soon the 2012/2013 ski season ends on April 20th, the resort will begin construction on several new and exciting activities, anticipated to open to the public by mid-summer. There is already so much to do in Vail’s summertime, such as ATVing and fly fishing, as well as the myriad of breath-taking hikes in the National Forest. Now, with the add-ons to Adventure Ridge, the summer experience has been elevated even further.
Welcome to 10,000 feet above sea level, where Adventure is the name of the game. Located at the top of the Eagle Bahn Gondola, Adventure Ridge at Vail offers fun and exciting activities for all ages to enjoy. Go horseback riding, play a round of disc golf, go tubing, or just soak up the views while eating BBQ on Talon’s Deck. Come up for the legendary high altitude family happy hour at the Friday Afternoon Club for live music, lawn games, and an unbeatable mountain sunset vista. Adventure Ridge is upgrading their facilities and landscaping, enhancing aesthetics and ease-of-use, in addition to the following new activities:
One of the most thrilling ways to experience the forest is undoubtedly via zip line, and now you can experience it for yourself at Vail. Adventure Ridge will now include a four-line 1,200 foot-long zip line, located just west of the current tubing hill lift. Guests will access the zip line by either Adventure Skyway or Little Eagle Lift chairs. Once at the top, they’ll strap in for the ride of their life down the zip line, 50-feet above the ground and feeling adrenaline surge and the rush of exhilaration at gliding speeds of 45-mph. With Vail’s Free Fall experience, you can ride solo or race against family members and friends.
Not just a winter sport, guest of Adventure Ridge will enjoy access to three lanes of summer tubing. Instead of snow, a special slippery material designed for summer tubing will cover the existing tubing lanes. Head up the Adventure Skyway and charge down the run on inner tubes in your shorts on a sunny day. Fun for the whole family!
Aerial Challenge Courses
For guests seeking more of a competition on their Vail vacation, the addition of two aerial challenge courses will be just the thing. The aerial courses will each feature three levels of constructed elements to maneuver, like a real-life platform video game. Shimmy up ladders and across rope bridges, swinging logs, cargo nets and more — all within the safety of a cable-attached harness. The beginner aerial course will feature four distinct and stable elements to climb and conquer while an intermediate to advanced aerial course will feature more than a dozen different elements that require more balance and upper body strength to successfully complete.
A large climbing wall is coming to Adventure Ridge to challenge guests to new heights. It will be designed to look like the world-famous Diamond of Long’s Peak, one of Colorado’s 54 “fourteeners”. In mountaineering, a 14er refers to a mountain higher than 14,000 feet. The Diamond in question is a sheer and prominent east face that resembles a diamond. Climbers on the new climbing wall can imagine themselves practicing to one day conquer an actual fourteener.
In addition to the old classics at Vail’s Adventure Ridge, such as:
Vail Summer Gondola
Just because the 2012-2013 winter ski and snowboard season comes to a close, it doesn’t mean the gondolas do. Vail Mountain’s Gondola One (the fastest gondola in the world and fully-equipped with WiFi) and the classic Eagle Bahn Gondola will be open to tour up the mountain for Adventure Ridge, hiking and other activities, and supreme on-hill dining.
Bring your bikes up the gondola to trek down on an adventure of your own making. Bikes will be allowed until 4:00 pm. Activities and dining this summer will be based out of Eagle’s Nest. Starting June 9th, Gondola One will run on weekends from Friday to Sunday, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. The summer hours will officially kick off on Thursday, June 13th and run the same hours but including Mondays, until September 2nd. For more information about Gondola One, read Vail Gondola: A Blog About Gondolas.
Eagle Bahn Gondola
The Eagle Bahn Gondola will run every day this summer, starting on June 13th, with hours from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm Sunday through Wednesday and extended hours til 9:00 pm Thursday through Saturday. You can take your mountain bikes up the Eagle Bahn as well, until 6:00 pm. The resort will offer scenic rides and tours.
More Summer Mountain Adventures To Anticipate
Another expansion plan for Vail is Epic Discovery, a proposed Summer Mountain Adventure slated for 2014 (pending USFS approval). Epic Discovery plans to feature five unique zones that re-imagine how families experience Vail; “a new experience where adventure, education and nature balance and elevate one another.” Learn through play in these discovery zones, fun for the whole family. This sounds intriguing, and personally, we’re excited to experience it.
